Camp Abilities Recreation Day Promotes Inclusivity in Sports for Youth with Visual Impairments

The Boys Town Vision Program hosted nine families on Saturday, June 24 at the Camp Abilities Recreation Day. This fun-filled day focused on bringing families together and promoting inclusive play.

Set in the Skip Palrang Memorial Fieldhouse on Boys Town Campus, the camp provided resources for children with vision loss and their families to learn about and play adaptive sports such as beep baseball, golf, beep kickball and yoga.

“Camp Abilities Recreation Day offers families who have children with visual impairments an opportunity to participate in community leisure activities as a family," said Kristal Platt, Boys Town Vision Program Coordinator.

Sports specialists were on-site to coach the children with visual impairments, while sighted family members were invited to wear eye masks to learn how to play sports by listening for the beep of the balls.

“For many of the families, it was the first time they experienced sports for the visually impaired. They seemed very interested in all activities and hopefully will continue to take the opportunity to explore these options," said Glen Wragge, Adaptive Physical Education Specialist.

To keep the fun going after the event, every family received a soccer ball with a bell to continue sports activities at their home.
