Vestibular Tests: Left Half Somersault Maneuver

  • One way of treating posterior canal BPPV is to do the half somersault.  Today we will be demonstrating how to do the left half somersault.  Initially you have the patient turn their head so their nose is facing the ceiling.  Hold this position for 30 seconds.  Then you have the patient lean forward and put the top of their head to the mat and hold this position for 30 seconds.  For left-sided BPPV, the patient will turn their head, so their chin is towards their left elbow and hold this for 30 seconds.  Then the patient will rise up halfway and hold their head here for 30 seconds and then the patient will sit all the way up with their head upright and the maneuver is finished.
