Pectus Conditions

Pectus carinatum is the condition when the chest wall bows outward, sometimes called the pigeon or bird chest. The condition typically appears in children older than 10 years. The most obvious sign is the jut out of the chest wall. Symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain
  • Fast heartbeat

Pectus excavatum is the condition when the chest wall concaves inward. This condition can prevent the heart from pumping enough blood that may cause symptoms of:

  • Shortness of breath

Pectus Surgery

Not all pectus conditions need immediate attention or surgical treatment. It is important to have your child medically evaluated for any abnormal growth and development. We ensure patients and families understand the diagnosis, management and treatment options and together, create the best care plan.

If surgical treatment is the best option, we are specialty-trained and experienced in:

  • Nuss Procedure
  • Ravitch Procedure
  • Brace therapy for pectus carinatum
