EEG
An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that measures electrical impulses in the brain. Electrodes (sensors) are placed on your head with wires that connect to a computer. The electrodes measure and record your brain function by displaying wavy lines on a computer screen.
The EEG lab at Boys Town National Research Hospital offers both outpatient and inpatient diagnostic services. The lab offers routine EEG monitoring and six long-term EEG monitoring equipped inpatient rooms. Boys Town National Research Hospital records all EEG examinations.
Routine EEG monitoring services and long-term monitoring (LTM) services are available for all ages. There must be a parent or legal guardian present during the EEG for all patients under 19.
Reasons for an EEG
An EEG technologist conducts the test following a provider's order. Our EEG technologists are registered through ABRET Neurodiagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation and work under a neurologist who is responsible for interpretation and clinical correlation of the EEG results.
A provider will request an EEG to diagnose or look for problems such as:
- Confusion
- Abnormal movements
- Seizures
- Memory loss
- Sleep disorders
- Headaches
Child Life Specialists
To help alleviate fears and anxieties a child may experience leading up to and during their EGG, providers can request a child life specialist work with the patient.
Child life specialists identify potential sources of stress, provide accurate and age-appropriate information to the patient and family members and work with the child to plan and practice coping strategies.
