Boys Town Audiology Clinic provides hearing evaluation and treatment across the full spectrum of hearing deficits for infants, children and adults. Our highly trained audiologists help you hear the world around you – from evaluation, to hearing device maintenance and everything in between.

Hearing Evaluations

The audiologists at the Hearing and Balance Center provide hearing evaluations to determine the degree and severity of hearing loss. These evaluations are performed on infants, children and adults. In these tests, the patient wears earphones and responds to sounds heard. Hearing evaluations for infants and children include monitoring for visual clues.

The following videos contain more detailed information on each of the different types of testing we may do. To try and get the most information about hearing abilities that we can during audiology appointments, we choose the test methods that patients are most comfortable with and holds their interest the longest. There are short descriptions of the types of testing below. Keep in mind that the age ranges/grades that are listed are just guides and a different testing method may be used depending on patient interests and needs.

Preparing for your hearing testing using conditioned play audiometry (CPA) – Hearing testing where the patient follows directions, waiting to play a game in response to sound.
Preparing for your hearing testing using computer-based conditioned play audiometry – Hearing testing where the patient follows directions, waiting to play a computer-based game in response to sound.
Preparing for your hearing testing using conventional audiometry – Hearing testing where the patient presses a button in response to sound.
Preparing for hearing testing using Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA) – Hearing testing where your child will turn to look towards sounds when they hear them.
Preparing for your infant’s hearing testing using Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) – Hearing testing for infants by monitoring the hearing nerve’s response to sound

Hearing Aids

If you or a loved one is diagnosed with hearing loss and could benefit from hearing aids, Boys Town audiologists will custom-fit the right device for the patient’s needs. A wide range of manufacturers and options are available to find the best hearing aid solution for each individual patient.

We can also provide custom ear molds for cell phones and other personal listening devices, Bluetooth- and FM-system compatible hearing aids and assistive listening devices for television and telephones.

Boys Town Hearing Aid Drop-In Clinic

We offer a first come, first serve hearing aid clean and care clinic. This clinic is available Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Service fees will be due at the time of service for hearing aids that were NOT purchased at Boys Town and/or are outside of the original warranty period. Hearing and Balance Center

Our Hearing and Balance labs support basic research efforts aimed at understanding hearing and train early-stage hearing scientists in areas related to hearing, audiology, auditory development and speech perception. Our researchers often work closely with audiologists and clinical colleagues to directly contribute to patient care. This collaboration allows Boys Town National Research Hospital to provide both pediatric and adult patients with the most comprehensive hearing healthcare.

Audiology Training and Externship

Boys Town National Research Hospital offers three 12-month full-time 4th Year AuD Externship positions. Students have two options for the externship: a clinical only externship or a clinical + research externship.
