ADHD Treatment Study

Boys Town National Research Hospital is conducting a study with kids with Attention Deficit Attention Disorder (ADHD) who also have severe behavioral problems. If you think that sounds like your child, we would like to hear from you. The goal is to learn more about how stimulant and non-stimulant medications work with ADHD, particularly how they change the way the brain responds to different types of pictures.

Participants must be 8 to 12 years old and have a diagnosis/ symptoms of ADHD and severe behavioral problems. KIds who have previously been treated with stimulants (e.g., Ritalin, Adderall, Dexedrine, ProCentra, Senzidi, Focalin) cannot take part in the study.

This study is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

What to Expect

Screen Visit

Before your child can start the study we will do a phone screen and invite you to a short screen visit at Boys Town.  For the screen, your child will have an assessment by a child psychiatrist to make sure that they have ADHD as well as Conduct Disorder (CD) or Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD). In addition, you and your child will fill out questionnaires and answer questions about their emotional and intellectual functioning.

The Screens (phone and in-person) lasts about 2 hours in total. Your child will be paid $15 per hour to take part in the screen. You will be paid $15 in escort fee.

The screen visit may lead to an invitation to take part in the treatment study.

Treatment Study

After the screen visit, we may invite your child to participate in the treatment study. The study involves treatment with either a stimulant (Adderall) or non-stimulant (Atomoxetine) medication for ADHD. We look at brain functioning using an MRI scanner before treatment begins and again after treatment finishes.  The MRI does not use x-ray radiation and is completely safe for children.

Your child will be paid $50 for each of the two MRI scans. You will be paid $25 in escort fee for each visit.

In addition, you will need to attend two brief in-person visits.  Your child will be paid $15 for each visit. You will be paid $15 escort fee for each visit.
