Some patients and/or caregivers are unaware that vaccinations need to be done in a timely manner to reduce the risk of bacterial meningitis (infection around the brain). Cochlear implant recipients are at increased risk of meningitis because the cochlear implant electrode is placed in the inner ear. Also, some patients have inner ear anatomy that increases the risk for meningitis.
