The Cochlear Implant Center at Boys Town National Research Hospital
has served children and adults with severe or profound hearing loss for
more than a decade with comprehensive clinical services. Since 1991,
approximately 250 children and adults have received implants at the
Center. Our staff currently follows about 300 patients clinically. Our
patient population consists of approximately 50% adults and 50%
children.
The Center provides expanded resources and opportunities for research
so that the newest and best devices and services can be made available
to our patients. Our cochlear implant team provides multi-disciplinary
intervention to cochlear implant candidates, including support for their
families. Our mission is to support the option of cochlear implants for children and adults by utilizing an individualized, family-centered approach to maximize auditory potential. Click on one of the links to the left to learn more about the Cochlear Implant Program.
Devices
The Center currently offers the Nucleus device, manufactured by Cochlear Corporation, the HiRes 90K device, manufactured by Advanced Bionics Corporation, and the Med-El device, manufactured by Med-El Corporation. Pre-operatively, candidates participate in a device orientation session in which all three devices are reviewed. Candidates choose which device best meets their individual needs, unless the Cochlear Implant Team recommends a specific device type for medical or other reasons.
