Childhood Speech, Language & Hearing - Voice Clinic

The Voice Clinic at Boys Town National Research Hospital serves individuals with chronic voice problems. Through proper assessment, the Clinic provides effective treatment of voice disorders.

Causes of Voice Disorders

Voice disorders can be due to many factors. Just a few of the causes include:

  • Loud voice use
  • Frequent throat clearing
  • Gastroesophgeal reflux disease
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Neurological disorders
  • Stress

Some voice problems can be caused by serious medical conditions. Therefore, if a voice problem persists for more than two weeks, a physician should be consulted immediately.

Treatment

After proper assessment of a voice disorder, the experts at Boys Town National Research Hospital Voice Clinic will discuss treatment options with the patient. These options may include medication, surgery, and/or voice therapy.

Staff

The Voice Clinic is staffed by highly experienced Ear, Nose and Throat physicians and speech pathologists who specialize in the treatment of voice disorders.

Voice Clinic Laboratory

The state-of-the-art laboratories at the Voice Clinic include instruments for phonatory (measurement of vocal sounds) function testing and visualization of the vocal folds with videostroboscopy.

Velopharyngeal Dysfunction Clinic

The Voice Clinic works closely with the Velopharyngeal Dysfunction Clinic at Boys Town Hospital, which specializes in children and adults with nasal speech who do not have a known cleft palate.

Staff members of the Velopharyngeal Dysfunction Clinic include an experienced ENT physician and speech pathologist who specialize in the treatment of nasal speech. In addition, the Clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories that include instrumentation of aerodynamic testing of palatal function and visualization of the palate and pharynx (i.e. velopharyngeal mechanism) during speech production.
