Laboratories at the Lied Learning and Technology Center focus on the communicative development of children with hearing loss and related communications disorders.
Research in this laboratory is divided into two main areas: First, is the description of speech production abilities of children with hearing impairment, especially those who have received cochlear implants. The second area of research is the exploration of the acoustic cues that define phonetic contrasts in different languages.
Research in this laboratory explores how more central auditory processes affect the ability of adult and child listeners to perceive sounds that are degraded, unpredictable or otherwise non-optimal.
Research in this laboratory explores the development of selected aspects of child language in normal-hearing and hard-of-hearing infants.
There are currently four cochlear implant research labs located at Boys Town National Research Hospital. The overall goal of this research is to better understand how cochlear implants provide information to the human auditory system in an effort to increase the benefit that cochlear implants provide to both children and adults.
