Dr. Patrick E. Brookhouser, Vice President and Director of Health Care, Boys Town and Founding Director of Boys Town National Research Hospital, has received two awards of distinction, recognizing his contributions and leadership in the field of medicine.
Boys Town National Research Hospital has received a $15,000 fellowship grant from the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell), to train a speech pathologist in the field of cochlear implants and auditory rehabilitation.
The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, a part of the National Institute of Health, has awarded a multi-center grant to the University of Iowa, Boys Town National Research Hospital and the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. This five-year, $8.9 million grant is designed to study mild to severe hearing loss in young children.
Michelle Hughes, Ph.D., Coordinator of the Cochlear Implant Program at Boys Town National Research Hospital, received a $1.46 million grant from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders to advance cochlear implant programming over the next five years.

Over the past five years, the Nebraska school system has taken an active role in helping families, students and schools in the treatment of life threatening asthma and allergic reactions. A protocol for the treatment of life threatening emergencies requires that three individuals in every school building be trained to respond to the treatment of symptoms of a child with life-threatening asthma or allergic reactions. Taking care of children with asthma/allergies at school has become a priority since children spend the majority of their day with peers and staff.
On October 19, 2008, David Chait, M.D., Associate Director of Boys Town Ear, Nose & Throat Institute, and six additional Boys Town National Research Hospital medical staff will travel to Santiago, Dominican Republic on a medical mission. Dr. Chait, along with 2 other surgeons, will spend 7 days in an underdeveloped country, performing 80-100 surgical procedures on children who would otherwise go without proper medical care.

Boys Town National Research Hospital welcomes six new physicians who will begin practice this August.
Thomas F. Tonniges, M.D, Director of Boys Town Pediatrics and Institute for Child Improvement, presented at the Ground Rounds teaching conference at the University of California Los Angeles on June 26 – 27.
In a modern day equivalent of the Pony Express, hundreds of Nebraskans mounted their motorcycles and headed out the week of May 4-10, to help bring awareness to children’s mental health issues. The Pony Express stopped by the Boys Town home campus and Boys Town National Research Hospital on May 9, and was greeted by Traci Ramos, mayor of the village.
The 2008 Boys Town National Research Hospital Memorial Day Run was an outstanding success, with more than 2300 walkers and runners participating in the three events: Children’s 1-Mile Fun Run, 1-Mile Walk/Run and 5-Mile Walk/Run. The event took place on Monday, May 26 on the Boys Town Home Campus. The money raised from the event benefits the hospital’s Cochlear Implant Program and the Lied Learning and Technology Center for Childhood Deafness and Vision Disorders.

Town National Research Hospital has opened the only International Adoption Clinic in Nebraska, located at Boys Town Medical Clinics, 14040 Hospital Road, on the campus of Girls and Boys Town.
In January 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning that over-the-counter cough and cold medication should not be given to children under the age of 2 years, as they have not been shown to be safe or effective. The FDA is continuing to look into the effects of over-the-counter cough and cold medications for children 2-11 years.
In 2001, Thomas Tonniges, M.D., Director of Boys Town Pediatrics, made his first trip to Kosova to help revitalize the deteriorating medical community. Since that time, Dr. Tonniges has made 4 additional missionary trips to this traditionally Moslem society. He has spent at least one week in the hospitals training and lecturing physicians, tending to patients, and working with community leaders to develop strategic plans to improve the quality of medical care for children.
