More than 200 deaf and hard of hearing children, along with their families, educators and counselors from Nebraska and western Iowa traveled to Omaha to participate in a community arts project for Boys Town National Research Hospital October 7.
The group gathered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hot Shops Art Center, located at 1301 Nicholas St. in Omaha, to begin creating a mural to be placed at the Hospitals Lied Learning and Technology Center for Childhood Deafness and Vision Disorders. To create the mural, participants painted and fired clay pieces with artists from Wilson Custom Tile Company. The mural will be unveiled at the Lied Center during the Hospitals annual Christmas party for deaf and hard of hearing children and families on December 16.
The mural design represents pathways that imply a communication journey, said Cathy Carotta, Ed.D., Associate Clinical Director for the Center for Childhood Deafness at the hospital. This journey may be one that parents take with their child or one that is experienced by an adult who loses their hearing later in life. The project offers a unique opportunity for deaf and hard of hearing children and adults to interact with artist and get hands on experience.
The project is being funded by the Nebraska Arts Council and the Mammel Foundation, with support from the Nebraska Regional Programs for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students, Very Special Arts Nebraska, the Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Nebraska Association of the Deaf.
